July 2011 Educational Meeting

Purpose
Is the “Federation” Meeting your Club’s and/or SC’s Square/Round Dance Needs

Approach

Develop what you feel the "Federation" needs to do for it to meet their and your club’s needs.
To do this we need to develop the following:
• What should this “Ideal World” of Square & Round Dancing look like?
• What do we need to do to get from where we are now to this “Ideal World”?
• What is needed from The Federation to help the dance clubs achieve this “Ideal World”?
• How do we put this into action within South Carolina?

In the April 2011 meeting we developed the following:

What should this “Ideal World” of Square and Round Dancing Look like?
1. Friendly
2. Welcome to all races and ages
3. Fun (without this, none of the other items count)
4. Educational
5. Healthy
6. Dress flexible
7. Creative
8. Everyone should be working together
9. Afternoon and evening classes and dancing
10. Programs attractive to the youth
11. Low Maintenance … too much food and setup requirements
12. Publicity/ public relations
13. Joint efforts between clubs
14. Advance and Challenge Dance clubs belonging to the “Federation”
15. Advance and Challenge Dancing at “Federation” meetings
16. Positive attitudes between dancers, callers, and cuers
17. Dance facilities that a club can support
18. Help starting new clubs
19. Supporting clubs with failing membership

In our July Federation Educational Meeting we developed the following:


What do we need to do to get from where we are now to this “Ideal World of Square & Round Dancing”?

1. Telephone Committees
2. Personal touch
3. Include music that would have more appeal to the "Younger generation".
4. Recruit younger callers/cuers to whom the younger generation could better relate.
5. More variety in music selection … maybe less "Country Music"
6. More public demonstrations
7. Get more involved in festivals.
8. We have got to get out and let people see what Square& Round dancing is.
9. Do we want to “modernize” Dance Attire?
10. We need to better define what “Proper SD Attire” means in today’s dance world.
11. We need a central clearing house for clubs scheduling special dances.
12. Advertise all special dances in the "Carolina Caller" … as soon as the dance date is known.
13. We need to campaign to get new subscribers for the “Carolina Caller”.
14. Callers need to be more understanding of the special attention that new dancers require.
15. Club dancers need to be more patient with the learning curves of new dancers.
16. Callers need to introduce more new music for all dancers.
